The Kanniya Hot Springs consists of a series of seven square shaped wells each with a depth of about four feet. The temperature of the water at these hot springs varies between wells, but the average temperature is warm to hot.
These hot springs are an example of nature in its purest form where the water from the well is believed to have healing properties. The water in each of the wells is not very deep, and one can see the bottom of the well. The depth of the well is such that the water will run out by drawing 20-25 buckets from it.
The Prehistory of kanniya hot water spring goes back to ancient Tamil King Ravana era and the first written references to the hot water springs is found in the epic Ramayanaya.
This hot water spring relates to Hindu culture. Traditionally most of the Tamils in Sri Lanka doing the religious rites for their lost loved ones in this hot water spring on their 30th day death anniversary. It is believed King Ravana started this religious rites for his Mother at this site. Toms believed to the that of beloved Ravana’s mum and Ravana are found in the nearby mountains.
